WNBA Accessories: Celebrate the History, Teams & Spirit of Women’s Basketball

The WNBA is more than a basketball league. It is a celebration of athleticism, perseverance, teamwork, and the incredible growth of women’s sports. From legendary players and historic franchises to a new generation of stars inspiring fans around the world, the Women’s National Basketball Association has built a legacy that continues to grow every season.

At Classic Pins, we’re celebrating that legacy with a collection of officially licensed WNBA accessories designed for fans who want to show their team pride beyond game day.

The History of the WNBA

The story of the WNBA began on April 24, 1996, when the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a professional women’s basketball league. The league officially began play the following year, with its inaugural season tipping off on June 21, 1997.

The original WNBA featured eight teams: the Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers, Houston Comets, Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Sacramento Monarchs, and Utah Starzz.

The first-ever WNBA game featured the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. The Liberty won 67–57, while Sparks guard Penny Toler made history by scoring the first basket in WNBA history.

The inaugural championship was won by the Houston Comets, who defeated the New York Liberty 65–51. Cynthia Cooper was one of the defining stars of that first championship run and became the league's first Most Valuable Player.

Since those early days, the league has continued to evolve. Legendary players such as Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Candace Parker, Maya Moore, and many others have helped shape the WNBA into one of the world's premier professional women's sports leagues.

A League That Continues to Grow

The WNBA's growth has been remarkable. What began with eight teams has expanded into a league reaching new cities, new generations of fans, and an increasingly global audience.

The 2026 season marks the WNBA's 30th season, with the league welcoming two new franchises: the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire. Toronto's addition is particularly historic because it became the WNBA's first franchise outside the United States.

The league is also continuing to expand in the years ahead, with Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia announced as future expansion markets.

The momentum surrounding women's basketball has never been stronger. In 2026, the WNBA is playing a 44-game regular season, with the league scheduled to increase to 50 regular-season games per team beginning in 2027.

That growth isn't just happening on the court. WNBA fandom has become a major part of sports culture, with fans proudly wearing team apparel, collecting memorabilia, decorating their spaces, and finding new ways to represent the players and teams they love.

Show Your WNBA Team Pride

For longtime fans, supporting a WNBA team is about more than watching games. It's about being part of the history.

More Than a Game

The WNBA represents decades of work by athletes, coaches, fans, and advocates who helped create opportunities for women to compete at the highest level of professional basketball.

Today, young athletes can look to WNBA stars and see a professional pathway that wasn't available in the same way just a generation ago. The league's history is still being written, and every new season adds another chapter.

That makes being a WNBA fan especially exciting. You're not just watching the history of women's basketball — you're watching it happen.
